Ruff Ruff is a brand and mobile app designed to connect people with adoptable pets in the Austin area. This project addresses the challenges of the scattered adoption process by providing an easy-to-use and enjoyable experience that encourages responsible pet ownership. Ruff Ruff aims to be seen as friendly and fun, while also conveying professionalism and sincerity. The brand's imagery and writing reflect the joys and responsibilities of pet ownership.
1. Project Overview
Ruff Ruff began as a final project for my Visual Design class. The goal was to create a complete brand and mobile app that showcased the brand, while solving a real-world problem. I chose to focus on pet adoption because of my passion for the subject and the opportunity to improve the adoption experience for both shelters and potential pet owners. The project took [Duration of project, e.g., "8 weeks"]. The process involved research, ideation, and design execution.
2. Research and Discovery
My research focused on the current pet adoption landscape. I examined existing adoption apps and shelter websites, and I interviewed people who had adopted pets or were considering adoption. Key findings included:
-
Scattered Information: Potential adopters must often visit multiple websites or shelters to find a pet.
-
Inconsistent Experiences: Adoption processes vary across shelters, causing confusion.
-
Emotional Journey: Adopting a pet is an emotional decision that the design should reflect.
-
Need for Details: Adopters want comprehensive information about a pet's history, health, and temperament.
3. Strategy and Concept
Based on my research, I developed the following strategy:
-
Brand Personality: Friendly, trustworthy, and joyful, yet professional and sincere.
-
Value Proposition: To provide a smooth and supportive experience for finding and adopting pets.
-
Key Features:
-
Detailed pet profiles with photos, videos, and descriptions.
-
Advanced search filters.
-
A map of nearby shelters and foster homes.
-
Tools for applications and communication.
-
Resources and tips for pet care.
The core concept was to design a mobile app that is both user-friendly and heartwarming, guiding people through the adoption process with confidence.

-
UI Design: I developed detailed mockups from the sketches, applying the brand identity to create a clean, modern, and user-friendly interface. This included [Mention specific deliverables, e.g., screen designs for key features, interactive prototypes].
-
Prototyping: I built an interactive prototype using [Figma, Adobe XD, etc.] to test the app's functionality and user experience.

6. Reflection
This project allowed me to apply my visual design skills to a real-world problem. I learned the importance of user research in design and gained a better understanding of the mobile app design process. Given more time, I would [Mention things you would improve or further develop, e.g., conduct more user testing, explore additional features, develop a marketing plan]. Overall, I am pleased with the result and believe that Ruff Ruff could significantly improve the pet adoption process.
